Here are some excerpts from our newsletter "Bea's Bridal Bits".
Unveiling the Mystery of Veils Occasionally, a bride will ask, "Do I have to wear a veil?". Of course you don't have to, but your headpiece and veiling will definitely complete your bridal ensemble.
There are so many headpiece options available. Tiaras, wreaths, jeweled hairpins, headbands, backpieces, and more. There are even more options for veiling. Veiling can be any length, single or multi-layered, elaborately embellished or totally plain. I highly recommend that your veiling be detachable so it can be removed at the reception, leaving your headpiece in place.
An then there's the blusher. The blusher is a veil that covers the face. It is usually lifted by the groom before he kisses his bride. This is a tradition from many years ago when marriages were arranged. Many times, the groom didn't know who he was marrying until the blusher was lifted during the marriage ceremony. Aren't you glad we live in the 21st century? Many of you ask if you have to wear a blusher. The answer: not unless you want to. About 40% of our brides wear blushers.
Fortunately, there aren't too many rules anymore about what's right or wrong so it's nearly impossible to make a mistake. The best rule to follow is: select something you really like. Opinions from friends, family and hairdressers are helpful but, remember, you're the one wearing it. You want to look like you, not someone else's vision of you.
It is very difficult to select your headpiece and veiling without your gown. If your gown has not yet arrived, we will use our sample gown for your veil appointment. I can then match the trims and edges that will complement your particular gown.
Every gown is beautiful on it's own but, in my opinion, the headpiece and veiling is what really makes a bride look like a bride. It's the "icing on the cake."

Make-up Tips Here are a few tips to keep your make-up fresh and long-wearing throughout your entire wedding day.
Do
- wear extra powder. It helps to set your foundation and gives a soft finish.
- wear a lash primer and a waterproof mascara
- wear a little color, browns and naturals can wash you out and often times not show well in pictures. Try blues, violets, even grays. They open up your eyes and are good for pictures.
- use a long-wearing lipstick, nontransferable is best.
- keep your make-up items handy for touchups.
Do Not
- try any new face products less than four weeks prior to your wedding.
- use red lipstick unless your teeth are bright white, it makes teeth look more yellowed.
- use moist lipsticks or glosses - bad for the kiss!

Hair-Styling Tips Often times your regular hair stylist is not the person that can create the hairstyle you want for your wedding day. This is particularly true of the up-do's. Many hair stylists are truly artists and specialize in creative hairstyles. (I've seen some very interesting hair styles over the past ten years.) Remember that you are having your hair styled to help you look your best and to complete your bridal ensemble, not to showcase the artistry of your hairstylist. They have hair shows for that!
Here are a few tips for finding a hair stylist. Ask your friends or coworkers for referrals. Meet with the stylist(s) to discuss the look you want for your wedding day. Provide pictures for them to use as a guideline. Be flexible! Creating the hairstyles you see in magazines can be very difficult, if not impossible, on real people. You may need to try more than one hairstylist to achieve the look you are most happy with. finding the right hair stylist can be very frustrating, even hair-raising (bad joke), but it is definitely worth the effort.
No matter which hair stylist you choose, have your hair done at least once before your wedding. It's a good idea to schedule your trial run early in the day so you can see how your hairstyle will look after many hours. Your hair will need a "touch up" at some point during your wedding day. Make sure your stylist shows you how to do this. Be sure to have any hair color changes done well in advance. This is not the day for surprises nor is it the time to discover the new you!
Unfortunately, I have no referrals to offer in this area. If you've found a hair stylist you are happy with, particularly if they do a nice up-do, please give me their name!

Bride Brain If you are a bride to be, you cannot escape Bride Brain. Here's the definition of this term: You are normally a confident, capable woman who is making her way in this world. You make decisions and function very well on a daily basis, but as your wedding day approaches, it seems you can't even decide what to have for breakfast. You misplace things, forget appointments (not to mention birthdays of friends and family members), and sometimes you're just plain unreasonable for no apparent reason.
When you decided to get married, the idea of planning your wedding was exhilarating. You had so many great ideas. This would be a breeze. What could be so hard about shopping for a gown, invitations, a band, flowers, bridesmaid dresses, tuxedos, and all of the other items you wanted to make your wedding perfect? After all, it's not like buying tires. Shopping for your wedding would be fun!
Well, all of this planning is fun, but it can be stressful and overwhelming at the same time. There are many decisions to make and everything is driven by a very important deadline!
The most stressful time for most of our brides seems to be during the two weeks prior to the wedding. The comment I hear most during this time is "I wish it was over". It seems that your life, at this point, is consumed with niggling details and incomplete tasks. So, here are some tips I hope you will find helpful to maintain your sanity during those last two weeks.
- Delegate as many of your last minute errands as possible to your bridesmaids or groomsmen. More often than not, these individuals are happy to help. you just need to tell them what to do, i.e., pick up your gown, retrieve guests from the airport, etc.
- Call all of your vendors just to check in and go over any final details. This will confirm for you that everything will be in place on your wedding day and will give you great peace of mind.
- Have your final fitting. Bring everything you are going to wear to your final fitting. It's important to see everything all put together once before your wedding day.
- Put all of the items you will need to get dressed (make-up, perfume, hose, jewelry, deodorant, etc.) into one bag. Don't forget to bring and iron and a needle and thread. With all your necessities together you can access them easily on your wedding day and you will be sure you haven't forgotten anything.
- The most valuable tip I can offer is to make time for yourself. With all of the activity and commotion, it is difficult to find time by yourself. Do something just for you (massages are great). Your personal time should be spent reflecting on this special time and what it means to you, not fretting over wedding details. All of the planning is over by now and anything you might have forgotten probably wasn't that important to begin with. Forget it!
- Finally, spend quality time with your guy. Your groom can feel neglected during this time because you are so wrapped up in wedding details and it's all you talk about. Plan a fun activity for just the two of you and don't discuss the wedding. Remember that you're getting married because you want to start a new life with the person you love, not because you're staging a major event!
